A suboccipital headache is characterized by a deep dull constant throbbing at the base of the skull. Pain cause by this type of headache is felt on one side of the head, and it extends from the back of the head to the eye. It may also cause another health issues such as neck stiffness.
The suboccipital muscles are the group of muscles located in both sides of the back of the neck and right below the base of the skull. The function of these muscle group is to connect the skull with the top two vertebrae of the neck. These muscles are also in control of the all turns and tips of the head.
Suboccipital headache is very common, and they are often described as being similar to tension headaches. Basically, anybody who slouches frequently is at risk of getting this type of pain. When the suboccipital muscles get a spams, this results in tension and tightness at the base of the skull. When muscles continusly contract and irritate this area, this will lead to an imminent headache.
