Sports injury treatment in Newmarket and Vaughan
Injuries are a part of any sports season and are typically placed into two categories: traumatic or overuse.
Traumatic injuries are caused by a specific incident, such as:
- Sprains (i.e., ankle or ACL)
- Strains, including pulled muscles
- Concussions (i.e., football collisions, soccer ball heading, falls, etc.)
In contrast, overuse injuries are caused by repetitive movements and/or poor technique performed over time. Some examples of overuse injuries include:
- Tendinitis (i.e., shin splints, jumper’s knee)
- Repetitive stress with poor technique (i.e., stress fractures, throwing injuries)
Sprains are extremely common in sports. Ligaments connect your bone to bone. When a ligament is stretched beyond its limits, a sprain can occur. Once the ligament is stretched, it is looser and more susceptible to being sprained again in the future.
Strains, or pulled muscles, are similar to sprains but occur in muscles and tendons, not ligaments. Tendons connect your muscles to your bones. When a tendon is stretched beyond its limit, a strain can occur. Once the tendon is injured, it must be resolved fully, or it can lead to a chronic overuse condition.
We will perform an injury screening to identify any underlying condition that can lead to future injuries. If/when we identify limitations and weaknesses, we will address them head-on to resolve them thoroughly.
As you progress through rehabilitation, our focus will shift to increasing the intensity and complexity of your program. Our team will incorporate sports-specific training to prepare your body for the demands of a competitive sports season. We will work to ensure you are ready for the start of your season.
Related Conditions
Sports injuries often affect more than just one area of the body, and they can be closely connected to other sources of pain or discomfort. Recognizing these links helps ensure a more complete recovery:
- Knee Pain Relief – Injuries such as ligament tears or strains frequently involve the knee, leading to instability and difficulty with movement.
- Shoulder Pain Relief – Overuse or impact injuries can cause shoulder pain, especially in athletes who perform repetitive overhead motions.
- Ankle Pain Relief – Sprains and fractures in the ankle are common in sports, often occurring alongside knee or hip issues due to the interconnected nature of the joints.
- Hip Pain Relief – Hip injuries can develop from sudden twists, falls, or repetitive strain, and they often contribute to reduced mobility in the legs.
By understanding how sports injuries are linked to these related conditions, you can take a more proactive approach to treatment. Early physiotherapy or medical care not only speeds up recovery but also helps prevent recurring problems that could limit performance or daily activities.
When Should You Seek Treatment for Sports Injuries?
Knowing when to seek treatment for a sports injury can make all the difference in your recovery and long-term performance. If pain continues after activity and does not improve with rest, it may signal an underlying issue that requires professional care. Swelling, instability, or a feeling that the joint might “give out” are also important warning signs that should not be ignored. A noticeable decline in performance—whether it’s reduced strength, flexibility, or endurance—can indicate that the injury is interfering with your ability to train or compete effectively. Even if symptoms seem manageable, seeking care early is a smart step if you want to prevent recurring injuries and protect your overall health.
Prompt treatment not only speeds up recovery but also reduces the risk of complications, helping you return to your sport stronger and more resilient.
