Post Surgery Massage Therapy Treatment: Knee Replacement Therapy

Knee replacement surgery is performed when a patient has a damaged knee joint that  causes trouble doing simple things like walking. Some knee replacement surgeries can be done using a new method called minimally invasive surgery, which uses a smaller incision. Walking can begin the day after surgery, with minimal assistance needed after about six weeks.

The main reason for a knee replacement surgery is the advanced deterioration of the knee joint.  This can be cause by knee arthritis. The most common arthritis is osteoarthritis, which is inflammation related to wear and tear of the knee joint. Wearing of your knee joint is a common problem with ageing. However, certain conditions can accelerate the process of wear, such as injuries in the affected area, muscle weakness or increased body weight. Rheumatoid disease, gout or infection can also increase your joint wear and tear.

After knee replacement surgery, people are standing and moving the joint the day after surgery. At first, you may walk with the help of parallel bars, and then a walking device — such as crutches, walker, or cane — will be used until your knee is able to support your full body weight. After about six weeks, most people are walking comfortably with minimal assistance. Once muscle strength is restored with physical therapy, people who have had knee joint replacement surgery can enjoy most activities (except running and jumping).

Massage therapy can be used as a treatment for post surgery rehabilitation. Our RMTs can work with a wide variety of patients, of all ages, in the treatment of knee replacement surgery, injury rehabilitation and post-surgery healing. Massage Therapy can also be used as part of a preventative care program. This includes sports training, injury prevention, range of motion therapy, and more! Together, you and our therapist will develop a treatment plan based on your needs.
