How to Identify Bicep Tendonitis

Bicep tendonitis, also called tendinitis, refers to an inflammation of the tendons in the biceps area. This injury is included along with bicep tendinosis and bicep tenosynovitis in a injury category often described as biceps tendinopathy. But how do you recognize this pain from other type of injuries in the biceps area? This video will show you a easy self assessment test.

The causes of bicep tendonitis may vary depending on the patient’s health history and habits. However, most prominently, this type of injury happens due to overuse of the shoulder, tendon impingement, sudden trauma, or shoulder joint instability. It also may be the result from other conditions in the affected area such as rotator cuff impingement syndrome, muscular tears, and more.

Symptoms that your pain may be caused by bicep tendonitis may include:

  • Pain over the bicipital groove
  • Pain when doing overhead activities
  • Aggravated pain when flexing shoulder, forearms or elbow
  • muscle weakness
  • clicking or snapping when moving shoulders

Massage can help relieve pain in the shoulder area. Bicipital tendon techniques are often used when treating patients with pain associated with tendon inflammation. It involves a rotating motion of the patient’s arm while applying a gentle force along the affected tendon. Massage will also help attain normal range of motion. Massage therapy may be complemented with other treatments for bicep tendonitis such as acupuncture, chiropractic care and physiotherapy.
