Fascial Taping for Tennis Elbow
Fascial Taping for Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow is a painful condition that occurs when tendons in the elbow area are overused, usually by repetitive motions of the wrist and arm. Despite its name, you don’t have to play tennis to get this. In fact, most cases of tennis elbow has occurred in people who don’t play tennis at all, instead, a good portions of affected patients tend to have jobs that requires the types of movement that can lead to tennis elbow (plumbers, painters, carpenters, butchers, etc). Tennis elbow pain can be located in the tendons of the forearm, but it can also spread into your wrist.
Tennis elbow is caused by either abrupt or subtle injury of the muscle and tendon area around the outside of the elbow. Tennis elbow specifically involves the area where the muscles and tendons of the forearm attach to the outside bony area (called the lateral epicondyle) of the elbow. Your doctor may call this condition lateral epicondylitis.
What Are the Symptoms of Tennis Elbow?
Symptoms of tennis elbow include:
- Pain slowly increasing around the outside of the elbow. Less often, pain may develop suddenly.
- Pain is worse when shaking hands or squeezing objects.
- Pain is made worse by stabilizing or moving the wrist with force. Examples include lifting, using tools, opening jars, or even handling simple utensils such as a toothbrush or knife and fork.
What is Fascial Taping?
Fascial Taping is a drug-free pain relief treatment that uses regular sports tape. It combines osteopathy, soft tissue therapy and physiotherapy by applying ongoing tension to the skin, fascia and muscles. Fascial taping aims to gently pull back damaged structures into alignment and restore normal movement. This often allows for rapid resumption of normal activities. Fascial taping is becoming very popular. It allows individuals to return to work and normal activities faster and assists athletes in an earlier return to competition. Similarly, for dancers and performers, it allows them to continue on as planned, with minimal interruption to rehearsal and performance schedules.
