Exercises to Lower Blood Pressure
Exercises to Lower Blood Pressure
February is #HeartMonth, and to commemorate it, we have decided to make this week our official #HeartHealthWeek. We will be posting videos, articles and infographics about how we can help you achieve cardiovascular health. Today, we will talk about exercises to lower blood pressure:
What is blood pressure?
Essentially, blood pressure is the force deployed by circulating blood onto the walls of the blood vessels. Blood pressure is regulated by the nervous and endocrine systems and it has a huge influence in people’s overall health. Low blood pressure is referred to as hypotension whereas high blood pressure is also called hypertension. Longterm hypertension may lead to kidney failure, heart diseases and strokes.
Common causes of high blood pressure include:
- smoking
- being overweight
- lack of physical activity
- salty diet
- alcohol consumption
- stress
- family history
- sleep apnea
What does exercise do?
Cardiovascular exercises or aerobic exercises can help anyone lower blood pressure. Activities such as jogging, walking, jumping rope, bicycling, or supervised exercise routines are a natural and effective treatment for hypertension. Aerobic exercise is often recommended to be accompanied by strength training as well as stretching. Exercise can make your heart a lot stronger. This mean the heart will be able to function better with less effort hence decreasing the pressure on the arteries.
