Common Causes Of Pain In The Lower Back, Hips & Legs
Lower back pain can be caused by various factors. However, it is estimated that almost everyone will experience some form of back problem during their lifetime, and for some people, this means it will be accompanied by pain in their legs and hips. So why does this happen?
The structure of the lower back is very complex. It contains five to six vertebrae made of bone. Intervertebral discs separate each vertebra, and facet joints connect the vertebrae together. The spinal cord nerves run down the center of the vertebrae in your lower back. Due to the number of structures involved, risks of a injury are high, and they can compromise one or more of these structures. This is the reason why people experiencing pain associated with a herniated disk, enlarged facet joints, spinal stenosis or piriformis syndrome, and sciatica, among others, will have pain or symptoms in other parts of their body, and not just their back.
Sacroiliac joint dysfunction:
Si joint pain is also known as sacroiliac joint dysfunction. If a SI joint is overly mobile or not mobile enough, then it can lead to discomfort in the pelvis area. SI joint pain can be the result of other conditions such as disc diseases, joint overuse, inflammation, degenerative diseases, or age. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction is more present in women in their 30’s and 40’s.
Herniated disc
Herniated disc occurs when the softer fluids pushes out through a tear in the tougher exterior. A herniated disc can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg. Most herniated disks occur in your lower back, although they can also occur in your neck.
Sciatica
Sciatica is a large nerve extending from the lower back and down the back of each leg. Sciatica is a common kind of back pain. Symptoms may include nerve pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and are felt in the buttock, or in the back of the thigh down to the calf, or even into the toes.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritisis a condition in which the cartilage that cushions the tops of bones degenerates, or wears down. Osteoarthritis can lead to spurs that put pressure on the nerves leaving the spinal column. This can cause weakness and pain in the arms or legs.
