Cervical Spine Adjustment to Improve Range of Motion

The cervical spine, commonly known as the neck, is the most fragile part of the spine. The cervical spine houses the spinal cord,  supports the head, and regulates blood flow to the brain. Injuries and pain in the cervical spine are are very common due to muscle strain or other  factors that can trigger more serious injuries such as whiplash. Chiropractic care focused on cervical manipulation can alleviate many types of neck pain with a conservative treatment regimen.

Cervical spine adjustment is a common technique utilized by chiropractors for many patients complaining of neck, upper back, and shoulder/arm pain, headaches, and simply to improve range of motion. Similar to the treatment for many conditions affecting the low back, chiropractic is considered as a first line of treatment for a range of cervical spine conditions. Chiropractic treatment goals for cervical spine complaint management include some combination of:

  • Reducing pain
  • Improving motion
  • Restoring function to the head and neck region

A decrease in range of motion and flexibility may result in a future complications and even disability. It is a frequent practice to avoid using affected body parts in daily activities, especially if they have been injured or are experiencing pain.  This becomes a “use it or lose it” case.  Body muscles and joints depend on movement to function properly. When they are not exercised they stiffen, adhesions and scar tissue can form, and mobility is further reduced.  Spinal adjustments and manipulations to other parts of the body to realign the bones and joints can restore range of motion, improve flexibility, balance and coordination. Our chiropractor can also recommend specific exercises that can be done at home to increase your strength and flexibility so that a patient able to maintain and build upon the gains from a chiropractic adjustments.

What is range of motion?

In the health care world, the term “range of motion (ROM)” is defined as the distance and direction a joint can move between the flexed position and the extended position. The act of attempting to increase this distance through therapeutic exercises, such as chiropractic, is also sometimes called range of motion.
