Acupuncture Treatment for Arthritis

A lot of people associate arthritis only with the hands, but the truth is that it can appear anywhere on your body! This condition is characterized by the inflammation of one or more of your joints. It can cause pain and stiffness in any joint in the body. Currently, there has been identified more than 100 forms of it; all with one common symptom: making it difficult to perform daily activities such as walking.

Although there is no cure for arthritis, an acupuncture treatment is an effective therapy that helps slow the progression of the disease. Moreover, many people who use acupuncture to treat arthritis are able to manage their pain, remain active, and lead fulfilling lives. By placing acupuncture needle, the therapist triggers signals that travels along the spinal cord to the brain, resulting in the release of neurotransmitters called endorphins and enkephalins. These neurotransmitters are believed to reduce the sensation of pain. Acupuncture also stimulates the production of cortisol, a hormone that helps control inflammation.

Common types of arthritis

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is known as the “wear-and-tear” arthritis. It is very common in people after they reach middle age. In osteoarthritis, the cartilage in the joint gradually wears away. The protective space between the bones decreases resulting in bone friction hence developing painful osteophytes. Osteoarthritis develops slowly, causing pain and stiffness that worsen over time.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can affect multiple joints throughout the body, and often starts in the foot. In RA, immune cells attack the the joint causing it to swell. Over time, damages are developed on the bone, cartilage, ligaments and tendons. It may cause serious joint deformity and disability as well.

Post-traumatic Arthritis

Post-traumatic arthritis can develop after an injury. Dislocations and fractures are the most common injuries that lead to this. Post-traumatic arthritis causes the cartilage between the joints to wear away. It can develop many years after the initial injury. An injured joint is about seven times more likely than an uninjured joint to develop this condition, even if the injury is properly treated.
