Structural scoliosis is characterized by a curvature in the spine that presents rotation. In this video, Chiropractor Dr. Vanhorne demonstrates a holistic treatment for structural scoliosis:
Structural scoliosis may be idiopathic (spontaneous origin) or can be caused by a disease or condition. Most notedly, congenital disorders such as spina bifida in which the spinal canal does not close properly has been associated with structural scoliosis. Other conditions may include nerve and muscular disorders such as cerebral palsy, marina’s syndrome and muscular dystrophy. Scoliosis can also be developed after injuries, infections and tumors.
Treatment options is based on age, curvature level and risk of progression. Nonsurgical treatment involve frequent check ups to examine progression, bracing and therapies such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy, physiotherapy.
Signs of scoliosis
- unbalanced shoulders (one appears higher than the other)
- unbalanced hips
- head is not centered over the body
- one shoulder blade prominently sticks out
- when bending forward, ribs are unbalanced
- waistline is flat on one side
There are a couple factors that may increase risk for scoliosis. Things such as family history of scoliosis, being female, a spinal bone pushed forward, abnormal short extremities, and conditions related to tissue development while the womb.
